The pine of Chudobín

The pine of Chudobín (Chudobínská borovice in Czech) is a 350-year-old, naturally growing species of Scots Pine (Pinus Sylvestris). In 2019 it became the European Tree of the Year winner. It grows on a rocky cliff on the left bank of the Vír dam, above the former Hamer rapids. It is named after the flooded village of Chudobín, which was sacrificed in favor of the construction of a Vír dam reservoir. The tree was already known in the times before the filling of the Vírská dam and became a frequent object of works by visual artists and photographers. Its name is also used in the geographical name of the whole locality - "U borovice".
